The drug Tramacet contains two painkilling ingredients, tramadol hydrochloride and paracetamol, which is also referred to as acetaminophen. Known chemically as 2-(dimethylaminomethyl)-1-(3-methoxyphenyl)cyclohexanol, tramadol is a bitter, odorless, white crystalline powder. It is an analgesic that acts on the central nervous system in an atypical opioid manner. The endorphins bind with the opioids in the spinal column and brain to block pain. Like endorphins, tramadol binds to the opioid receptors and stops the brain from receiving pain signals. Also, relief from pain lasted longer for patients who took Tramacet, than for patients who only received paracetamol.
Tramadol is absorbed more slowly than paracetamol, and its half-life in the body is longer. The peak painkilling abilities of tramadol occur approximately two to three hours after taking this medication. Paracetamol peak occurs approximately one hour after taking Tramacet.
After metabolization, 30 percent of the tramadol dose is excreted as an unchanged drug in the urine, with 60 percent of the dose being excreted as metabolites, or byproducts of metabolism. The half-life plasma elimination of tramadol is five to six hours, but when multiple doses of Tramacet are taken, elimination time increases to seven to nine hours. Paracetamol is primarily metabolized by the liver. Under nine percent of paracetamol is excreted as an unchanged drug in the urine. The half life of paracetamol is two or three hours in adults.
The use of tramadol over a long period of time may cause a chemical dependence on this drug, which means people can experience withdrawal symptoms once they stop using this medication.
